Big, bold and beautiful, American desserts are the stuff of our sugary dreams. And for these sweet treats, The Hummingbird Bakery is the place to be. Tradition and experimentation come together in a hooray of freshly baked, American-inspired goodies, so we decided to take a closer look…
Call me cupcake
When you think of The Hummingbird Bakery, you think cupcakes. These little parcels show off the cake know-how they've got here – each with zingy, complementary flavours, beautiful decoration and super soft sponge. Go for the Vanilla – with just-whipped buttercream frosting and rainbow sprinkles – if you like cake in its original glory, or opt for the Salted Caramel if you're after something a bit different. You'll find a light chocolate sponge hosting an indulgent dulce de leche and their signature caramel frosting.
Don't know where to start? Don't worry, their curated Selection Boxes are here to help. From the most popular Party Selection, to the Office and I Love You, you'll find one for every occasion. And if you want to go big, opt for a Monthly Special box, with 12 of their unique, limited edition creations.
The Hummingbird Bakery came about from founder Tarek Malouf's craving for some authentic American treats. The first bakery opened its doors in 2004 to the good people of Notting Hill, founded on a passion and love for all things sweet from across the Atlantic. And it turned out that Londoners came to share this passion too, as they're now serving up their star-spangled goodies from six locations across the city.
There's a simple ethos that infuses the whole company – cakes taste best when they're freshly baked, using the same techniques that you'd use on a rainy Saturday afternoon baking at home. And this is why each location has its own kitchen and resident expert bakers, freshly whipping up your cakes. Every. Single. Day.
A piece of cake
It's not just cupcakes that you'll find at Hummingbird , they also have a wide selection of cakes, brownies, buns and whoopie pies. We love their Red Velvet cake, an eight-inch wonder of deep red vanilla sponge flavoured with a touch of cocoa and smothered in cream cheese frosting. If you love the decadence but don't need a full cake, opt for a slice of the Chocolate Mayonnaise Bundt, where a spoonful of mayo is mixed in with the chocolate to create a seriously blissful sponge, and crowned with a glossy chocolate glaze.
If you feel like doubling up on the American vibe, opt for the Red Velvet Whoopie Pie. Here you'll find two of their popular, delicate red velvet sponges sandwiched together with a sweet cream cheese filling.
