Balans Soho Society: restaurant profile

With a philosophy welcoming 'the rogue, the rascal and the reprobate', it's a safe bet that Balans Soho Society isn't afraid to dish up sinfully delicious grub. This London institution has just celebrated its 30-year anniversary, with a real knack for reinvention. Its decades-long popularity is pretty impressive considering London's fickle dining scene. So what's the secret? Whether it's the warm atmosphere, double-dipped chips or flowing cocktails, Balans has clearly got the right formula for an ace night out.

A brand new Clapham location has joined the Balans Empire, alongside its other venues in Soho, Kensington and Westfield. With tempting brunch and dinner menus and a late-night weekend license, we're guessing it will go down well with the Clapham Common crowd.

A Soho staple

Balans is a bit of a Soho legend. Co-founders David Taylor and Prady Balan opened up a sandwich café on Old Compton Street way back in 1987, now called the Balans Café. The café was a hit not only with the lunchtime crowd but also with the Soho clubbers, who would spill out of the district's nightspots in search of some late-night eats. As its popularity grew, the owners opened up the first Balans Soho Society restaurant just up the road. It's long been the favourite haunt of celebs, club kids and neighbourhood regulars alike.

Brilliant brunches

If brunching is an art form in London, Balans Soho Society is its Botticelli. Order from the original Soho location for a decadent selection just begging to be eaten in bed. We struggle to think of a classier way to spend a lazy Sunday than with a crossword puzzle and the 'high society' eggs benedict. Avocado, bacon, poached eggs and lobster sit on top of an English muffin, drizzled with a creamy hollandaise. Smashed avocado bruschetta with quinoa and halloumi gets your weekend off to a clean and green start. Or have you woken up with a trace of the fear? The fiery tomato sauce of 'eggs in hell' is the perfect antidote to restore your bravery - you'll be laughing off last night's antics with your pals in no time.

All-day dining

From pancakes to a full English, Balans' top-notch breakfast items go down a treat at any time of day. It's ideal for those of us who appreciate life's finest achievement: a good, long lie-in. But you'll also find more typical lunch and supper options like the 'infamous Balans burger' sitting pretty in its pillow-y brioche bun. Cornish crab linguine, red curry and a smoked chicken Waldorf salad are additional highlights of the all-day menu, which focuses on international classics done very, very well. Top up your meal with sides like baked beans, black pudding or a single pancake with fruit. Comfort food gets a sophisticated makeover here. It's all in tune with the restaurant's philosophy of living in the pursuit of pleasure, and the menu is a real crowd-pleaser.
