Deliveroo’s most popular dishes: 2017

Staying in is the new going out – we Brits just love eating restaurant dishes from the comfort of our own homes. After all, who wouldn't want their favourite food delivered straight to their door?

And that trend shows no signs of slowing down in 2017. We've rounded up the most-ordered meals from across the country, with American, Italian and Thai cuisines taking the podium positions.

American runner-up, Dead Hippie Burger – MEATliquor

There's no surprise that we love a good burger. From the humble fast-food menu snack to gourmet mega-burgers, you can't throw a stone without hitting a burger joint. MEATliquor's Dead Hippie Burger likes to keep things simple. Two mustard-fried patties are packed with lettuce, cheese, pickles, minced white onions and their signature Dead Hippie sauce into a fresh bun. It's London's favourite order, and the country's second most-ordered American dish.

American winner, Byron Burger – Byron

Despite all the wonderful burger combinations out there, we seem to like the old favourites – and that's where Byron comes in. Their Byron Burger is simplicity in a bun – a traditional 6oz patty cooked medium, topped off with dry-cured bacon, mature cheddar and fresh salad, on a squishy homemade bun. Why mess with a classic?

Italian runner-up, Margherita – VIP Very Italian Pizza

The traditional margherita is always there for us. Though we love to venture out into the world of gourmet pizza toppings, there's something so comforting about a classic. And at VIP, they do it the proper Italian way – the family have been making pizzas since 1845. It's served up straight from the oven, with melted Fior di Latte mozzarella, tomato, fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil.

Italian winner, Penne Giardiniera – Carluccio's

Carluccio's has their pasta down to a fine art. Their Penne Giardinera is a delight for veggies and carnivores alike – a bowlful of giant Pugliese penne topped with shredded courgette, tiny flecks of chilli and liberally graced with fried balls of spinach and cheese. Not only is it delicious, it's also virtuous, with 50p from every order donated to Action Against Hunger. How could anyone say no?

Thai runner-up, anything from Banana Tree

As a country, we've taken Thai food to our hearts – it's bright, light, and zingy. Banana Tree's menu is so good that everything counts as a runner-up. For us though, it's the Steamed Chicken Dumplings in Fresh Herb Sauce every time. We also love the Tamarind Spicy Aubergine for a Thai vegetarian alternative, with peppers, carrots, spicy bean paste, garlic, ginger and tamarind.

Thai winner, Classic Pad Thai – Busaba Eathai

There can only be one winner – and it's Busaba Eathai's Classic Pad Thai by a nose. It's a nest of noodles stir-fried with juicy king prawns, egg and succulent tofu. Topped with beansprouts, crushed peanuts for crunch, and dried shrimp for a whack of umami, this top dish is a thrilling mix of textures and flavours. It's no wonder everyone's ordering it.
