They're one of the latest trends in oriental eating to make it over here. Part pub, part Japanese tapas bar, over in Tokyo they're where workers go to unwind after a long day, enjoy a sake or two and some sushi or another tasty titbit. But, while most food trends do start in the capital, for anyone wanting to try an izakaya London isn't the centre of this particular foodie universe. There are restaurants as far afield as Liverpool and Edinburgh, all serving authentic Japanese dishes and all ready to be brought to you by Deliveroo.
1. Takoyaki - Harajuku Kitchen
The idea of ordering from an izakaya isn't to fill up on food, it's more matter of having handy little appetisers to go with your drink. This dish from Harajuku Kitchen in Edinburgh is a perfect example of the sort of thing that you can expect to find on the menu. Finely minced octopus is combined with dough dumplings and fried in a special moulded pan. They're then served with a fish sauce on top as the perfect little finger food that's delicately flavoured and decidedly moreish too!
2. Rainbow Maki - C & R Izakaya
Naturally, sushi in its many forms is also a staple of the traditional izakaya and there's a huge selection to choose from at C & R Izakaya. The restaurant, in London's Westbourne Grove, closely resembles the oriental model and describes itself as a "Japanese gastropub". This commitment to quality shines through in their Rainbow Maki. They feature no less than seven kinds of market-fresh mixed fish, with crabmeat, avocado and tobiko all wrapped in the traditional nori seaweed. So it's as colourful as it is delicious and so fresh you'll almost hear the crashing waves of the sea with every bite.
3. Pork Belly Bao - Izakaya
Heading up to Liverpool, where Izakaya will be only too pleased to introduce you to all the delights of the traditional bao bun. These are doughy yet light rolls that are made to a special recipe and come with a wide range of fillings. The standout one on their menu is the Pork Belly which not only includes the meltingly tender meat but also comes with pickled red cabbage, crispy shallots and a spicy mayonnaise. It's one of their most popular dishes and we'd urge you to discover it for yourself without delay!
4. Salmon Sashimi - Itabashi
If you're looking for an izakaya with a great track record then Itabashi in Teddington could be the place for you. That's because it's one of the latest restaurants opened by famous sushi chef Hai Dong Park who used to work in the Michelin-starred Nobu. Now he's bringing his skills to the suburbs and nowhere are these shown off better than in the Salmon Sashimi. Three pieces of perfectly marinated fish are served on their own and they're so fresh and delicately prepared that they just don't need any accompaniment.
Is izakaya your kind of thing? Then leave it to Deliveroo to bring you some truly amazing dishes.
