Over the last few years, vegetarian takeaways, restaurants and cafés have taken over the UK. No matter where you are in the country, chances are you'll come across at least a few eateries that have plenty of faux-meat substitutes for you to try. Many non-specialist restaurants have added vegan meals to the menu too, ensuring that anyone wanting to avoid animal products has a dish to feast on. In fact, there are more vegan dishes available throughout the UK than ever – from scrumptious starters to delicious desserts. Don't believe us? Well, we've found four vegan cakes that are real game changers, including brownies, cookies and a particularly exciting cake entry.
1. Chocolate Gateaux Slice
At Vegan Express in London, the ultimate aim is to make veganism mainstream by offering customers a wide variety of tasty vegan food. This includes nutritious soups and salads, as well as patties, burgers and pizzas. They also have plenty of soy-based desserts, including Sticky Toffee Pudding and American Baked Cheesecake – because vegans deserve to indulge in decadent desserts too! We thoroughly recommend the Chocolate Gateaux Slice, though. This delicately made, moist morsel is one of the fancier sweet treats on the menu - if you're going to indulge, you may as well do it right!
2. Rhubarb and Ginger Upside Down Cake
Across London, Mildreds is praised for offering a wide variety of vegan dishes including starters, mains and, you guessed it, desserts. Not just fruit as a dessert either, proper cakes in several flavours that aren't just strawberry or banana! Their Rhubarb and Ginger Upside Down Cake is an absolute gem for vegans with a sweet tooth. It's served with rhubarb syrup and coconut yoghurt, it's raw, it's simple and it's sublime.
3. "Illegal" Cake
The more popular veganism becomes, the more likely restaurant owners are to place special diet sections in their menus. This is exactly what has happened at Bad Ass Cakes, the home of wonderfully gooey Brownies served in huge portions (think pizza slice) and the Award-Winning Jamaican Rum Cake Slice. Alongside their regular recipes, they've added a list of dishes for anyone with special dietary needs such as non-dairy, gluten-free and, of course, vegan. The Illegal Vegan is our favourite. This lemon drizzle cake is so soft, it's so moist, it's so zesty... We told vegan didn't mean bland.
4. Red Velvet Cupcakes
Not everyone wants a full cake slice and since cupcakes are as popular as veganism right now we just had to include one. Available from the award-winning Hummingbird Bakery, where the motto is "going vegan doesn't mean going without", the trademark Vegan Red Velvet Cupcakes are available in packs of six or twelve. They are beautifully presented and incredibly tasty, so much so that we imagine non-vegans wouldn't even know the difference!
