Our obsession with beefy American burgers – gourmet, classic or otherwise – is showing no sign of letting up. And why should it? Why fight against the allure of a glossy, toasted brioche bun packed with a juicy ground beef patty, gooey cheese, sharp pickles, fried onions and sauce? It's not a fight we're going to win.
And what's better than a burger? A doubled-up burger. We've rounded up a few of the best in the business that let you stack your wonders to your heart's delight.
1. The Dead Hippie, MEATliquor
Not only is the Dead Hippie burger London's most-ordered dish on Deliveroo, it contains not one, but two French-mustard-fried beef patties. Slathered in MEATliquor's trademark Dead Hippie sauce, melted cheese and served up with lettuce, pickles and minced white onions, this legendary burger will mean you'll need to keep the kitchen roll close to hand.

2. The Mighty, Gourmet Burger Kitchen
You might want to loosen the belt-buckle for this epic number from self-styled burger revivalists GBK. Two 6oz grass-fed beef patties squeeze into a toasted brioche bun, along with mature cheddar, crispy bacon, garlic mayo, dill pickle and house-made relish. Still hungry? Add some of GBK's famous chunky skin-on double-cooked fries and house onion rings for a real feast.

3. Juicy Lucifer, Red's True Barbecue
If you want to turn up the temperature and get your double burger fill, check out Red's True Barbecue. Only chilli fiends should apply for the Juicy Lucifer, a devil of a burger packed with two beef patties – with melted spicy three cheese centre – fried onions, pickles, dirty sauce, peppered bacon, ballpark mustard and fiery hot wing sauce. Phew.

4. Double Bacon Cheese, Byron
Doubling up is the name of the game with this one, and when it comes to Byron's burgers, more is always better. Two 6oz hamburgers are bundled in with dry cure bacon, pickles and the classic-condiment-combination, ketchup and mustard. The special finishing touch is Freddar cheese – Byron's burger supremo Fred Smith's version of American cheese. Long may it melt.
