"Surf or turf" is a truly delectable dilemma when you're presented with the option of an incredible steak or a fresh piece of fish. Luckily some clever person somewhere decided that Surf and Turf would be the best way to reduce the likelihood of menu meltdowns when faced with the conundrum of either meat or seafood. These are the best places in London to get one and the other, whether you're craving classic American Surf and Turf or something more exotic.
1. Burger and Lobster
Burger and Lobster started life as a humble pub and has literally conquered the London food scene in a matter of a few years. It is the very essence of Surf and Turf. Here, you don't have to choose between burger and lobster, you can have your cake (burger and lobster) and eat it. You can build a burger with your favourite toppings and add lobster inside the sesame bun, or you can go all out and add the lobster to the side, claws and all. Best get cracking!
2. Cattle Grid
Cattle Grid is getting a name for itself as a serious steak joint. Throw in some juicy prawns and you're truly riding the wave. You can customise your plate with one of their many sauces, perhaps try the blue cheese or if you fancy something really different, you could try the bone marrow gravy. They also have a huge range of extras to choose from, including shredded pork, goat's cheese and caramelised onions.
3. Big Easy
There's a reason state-side food is big news in the UK at the moment, and it's probably because of the amazing flavours that come from a low and slow smoker. Big Easy are slaves to their smoker, and you might be too after you try their BBQ Surf 'n' Turf. Choose from ribs and shrimp, or chicken and shrimp, and because Surf 'n' Turf is about not having to choose, there's also the option to have all three. Phew! If you've got room, why not slap some Lobster Mac 'n' Cheese on the side.
Seawise serve their Surf 'n' Turf with a sirloin steak, lobster tail, salad and chips. The sweetness of the lobster tastes just right next to the richness of the steak; especially with the chilli and garlic-infused dressing that Seawise use for their seafood. You'll probably need a nap after, but you'll definitely have sweet dreams.
5. 65 and King
65 and King is an award-nominated restaurant and the menu definitely doesn't disappoint. Once you've munched your way through a starter of zucchini fries, chicken wings and prawn tacos, it'll be time to brace yourself for the Surf 'n' Turf which is served with half a lobster, a rump steak and half a rack of ribs. A Powergranate Smoothie will wake you up before you reach peak food-coma.
Bintang solves that age old question of what to have in your Katsu curry. They have a number of options, but our favourite is definitely the Surf 'n' Turf Katsu served with crispy panko coated meats and seafood. They serve it with rice or salad. Perfect for lunch, and an alternative way to enjoy Surf 'n' Turf. Do it the Korean way!
