Top Curries in Brighton: 6 of the Best

Oh, how we love curry. From the biryani of backstreet Bangalore to delish daal dropping in from Delhi, we're really, really big fans. Think quiet old Brighton doesn't have its fair share of classy curry houses? Think again – there's plenty of authentic restaurants to choose from, and if you live close enough, we'll deliver right to you! Here's our six picks:

The Chilli Pickle

Let's put it like this, you don't get named as one of the UK's top 100 restaurants for six years in a row without having something a little bit special about you. Offering up a delectable range of curries, head chef, Alun Sperring, at The Chilli Pickle serves traditional Indian food with style and verve. Order the Grand Thali Box – your choice of curry plus lots of small dishes selected by the restaurant's passionate staff. From courgette shorba to onion bhaji, it's a homemade feast fit for a king. On the health kick? Why not plump for the Punjabi aubergine curry, a vehemently veggie option, or feel the heat with the red tiger prawn curry. Refined and exquisitely spiced, it's a real homerun!

Giggling Squid

Of course, curry isn't just the preserve of India, not by a long shot. Thailand has a rich history of delivering scrummy curries to the hungry masses. Aromatic, creamy and immensely comforting, it's a style that's big on vibrant, healthy ingredients. Oh, and flavour. There's some pretty big flavours going on too. Giggling Squid, one of Brighton's best Thai restaurants, does a fine line in Thai curries. The Penang chicken curry, thickened with creamy coconut milk, is an absolute classic, while the red squid curry is pretty much perfect for anyone after a seafood option. The vegetable tropical jungle curry, packed full of fragrant Thai herbs, is an ideal choice for veggies who need some serious heat with their meal.

The Curry Leaf

No prizes for guessing what's on the menu at The Curry Leaf! That's right, they serve up some of the south coast's spiciest dishes. It's a great pick for curry connoisseurs after an authentic Indian meal. The Malabar mutton curry is the headline act. The mutton is slow-cooked in a sinfully dark sauce, made with onion and coconut, and seasoned with authentic spices from Malabar's coastal region. It's one of The Curry Leaf's most popular choices. Nom nom nom.

Chaula's is rocketing veggie curries right to the forefront of Brighton's culinary scene, one perfect dish at a time. The vegetable kolapuri, featuring a delicious range of mixed vegetables, spiced to perfection, delivers flavour by the mouthful, while the mutton panneer curry with cashews, peas, cottage cheese and potato, covered in a heady coconut sauce, is a real crowd pleaser. Proving once and for all that meat isn't a prerequisite of a great curry, Chaula's is a great choice.

Indian Summer

An award-winning restaurant, Indian Summer doesn't do anything by half measures. Take their Hyderabadi murgh, a glorious dish featuring tender chicken, yoghurt, nutmeg and cinnamon marinade and a red chilli sauce. It's delightfully flavoured and hella spicy. An Indian summer on a plate.

Sukhothai Palace

Boasting one of the most extensive Thai curry menus in the country, let alone the city, Sukhothai Palace is the way to go for a feast of epic proportions. Think of a curry. Chances are they've got it ready and waiting to go. From the chicken masaman curry, a Muslim dish featuring potatoes and a rich coconut milk sauce, to the tofu panang curry – a spicy veggie option with basil and lime leaves – there's a stunning selection of dishes to choose from.
