London is a Vegan Pizza Lover's Dream

When you think of most traditional pizzas, they're not something that would readily fit with a vegan diet. You can't get away from the fact that one of the mainstay staple pizza toppings - mozzarella - is a cheese. Added to that, many of the extra toppings used in pizza are meat, fish or cheese-based too.

But with the popularity of pizza as both a takeaway and eat-in food, it's often the case that a night out with friends will involve the beloved Italian dish. It's just as well that here in the UK we're lucky to have some of the finest pizzerias outside of Italy to choose from.

With the number of people switching to a vegan diet in the UK, there are plenty of pizzerias out there that have recognised that vegans love pizza too, and have made special efforts to include tempting pizza choices for people who want to stay true to their vegan lifestyle, but love a slice of pizza now and then. Perhaps more than any other city in the country, London leads in providing vegan pizza options that are so good they might tempt even the most confirmed meat-eater to give them a try.

1. Pumpkin Seeds and Pesto at 400 Rabbits

With a Time Out accolade for one of the best pizzas in London, 400 Rabbits in Crystal Palace knows how to serve the perfect pizza. Their bases are sourdough, left to rise for 48 hours before it's cooked and the toppings reflect the best of seasonal British produce, along with San Marzano DOP tomatoes.

Their vegan pizza is topped with garlic and pine nut pesto, slices of courgette, tomato and radish. Pumpkin seeds add some crunch and a sprinkling of fresh thyme gives the pizza an aromatic but subtle flavouring.

2. The Marinara - a Vegan Classic

For anyone who knows a bit of Italian language but isn't familiar with the dish, the name for the classic vegan option in a pizza restaurant menu might be misleading. The Marinara pizza or "sailor's pizza" is thought to have been given its name in the 1700s when it was traditionally eaten by Italian sailors. It was a natural choice to be baked on board, thanks to the main ingredients being easy to preserve for long voyages. In fact, though, it doesn't include any fish at all.

The classic Marinara at BOnA Sourdough Pizza should hit the spot for any vegan diner. Topped with tomato, oregano and garlic and with no cheese anywhere near it, this pizza has that soft and airy, slightly chewy base that you only get from an authentic Neapolitan-style sourdough pizza. Listed by the Gambero Rosso as producing one of the 12 best pizzas in London, you know you're getting the real deal when you order from BOnA Sourdough.

If you're dining in, expect a warm welcome, but you may have to wait to be seated as they don't take reservations. Of course, there's no waiting required if you pre-order with Deliveroo.

THEO'S is another pizzeria that's been lauded for its wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas and is listed as one of Time Out's 100 best cheap eats in London.

Foodies flock there to sample the acclaimed pizzas and for vegans who want to sample THEO'S delicious doughy but light pizzas, then there's no better choice than the Marinara. Topped with tomatoes, garlic, the classic Italian herb oregano and olive oil, this wood-fired pizza will hit the spot. Of course, there's always the option of adding some extra vegan toppings to create a personalised Marinara.

With more and more pizzerias making sure that they have at least a few vegan options on their menus, there's no need for a London vegan to feel left out when ordering a slice or too from Deliveroo!
