These days, there are so many different types of dishes to choose from it can be difficult to pick one. On the other hand, the sheer amount of variety has meant that some traditional, delicious dishes have been left behind. London might be bringing back the kebab with the use of new cooking techniques, experimental combos and unusual ingredients but right now we're going to explore the world of tasty chicken Indian dishes, all of which are making a comeback here in Belfast.
1. Chicken Tikka Masala – Nu Delhi
Let's start with one of the most traditional Indian chicken curries of all time: the Chicken Tikka Masala. Almost every good Indian restaurant or takeaway will do this dish, but if you're looking for quality try Nu Delhi. There's plenty to choose from at this high-end restaurant, where Indian spices and the Northern Irish come together in a beautiful combination. Their Tikka Masala uses local produce and traditional Indian methods, but other than that little is known about this super-secret recipe. It's a real winner and is absolutely perfect for anyone who loves this authentic Indian dish.
2. Tandoori Chicken Shaslik – The Raj
As far as old school curry houses go, few are more authentic than The Raj. Like Nu Delhi, this restaurant offers a wide range of Indian cuisine, including starters, curries, biryani and even special dishes that are only available from The Raj. It is the tandoori dishes that are particularly interesting though, as there are just so much more than you would usually expect. Of course, for chicken-lovers the most obvious choice is the simple Chicken Tandoori, but if you're looking for something a little more interesting you may want to try the Tandoori Chicken Shaslik. With tender chicken breasts, marinated in yogurt and a secret selection of spices, complimented by onions, peppers and tomatoes, this dish is delicious.
3. Chicken Biryani – Bombay Brasserie
Of course, full-on curry isn't for everyone and sometimes you fancy a traditional rice-based dish such as Biryani. Fortunately, Bombay Brasserie is home to plenty of Biryani options, all made with pilau rice stir fried with spice, onion and accompanied by a side of vegetable curry. There's lamb, prawn and vegetable varieties on offer, but obviously the chicken options really captured our attention. There's the popular traditional Chicken Biryani, as well as a Chicken Tikka Biryani, which combines the best of two worlds.
4. Dopiaza – Archana
Finally, let's finish with one of the top Indian cuisine hot-spots in all Northern Ireland. Archana opened all the way back in 1986, a clear testament to just how good their food is. There's plenty to choose from on their lengthy menu, which includes plenty of starters, Balti dishes, specialities, vegetarian-friendly cuisine and even entire meals based around the main ingredient – cheese. There's a clear favourite though, despite the variety: Archana's speciality dish Dopiaza, which they themselves recommend. Diced, tender chicken sautéed with onions and served with rice, Dopiaza is a truly tasty chicken dish.
There you have it: four top-notch Indian restaurants and takeaways that serve some of the best chicken dishes in all of Indian. Whether you want a traditional curry or a spicy biryani, Belfast is bringing back Indian chicken dishes in a big way.
