Now that autumn's really with us there's nothing nicer on a cold day to head for the warmth of the local for some great food and drink. Best of all, of course, is a fantastic Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. But why wait for the weekend to treat yourself when there's so much great choice and value out there whether you just want a classic burger or something a little more special?
So go on. Don't you deserve a little treat once in a while, at least to get you in training for the carb and calorie-fest that is Christmas?
1. Bluebell Beef, The Bluebell
Here's a burger that's the stuff of every American takeaway lover's dreams. A prime 8oz Aberdeen Angus burger from The Bluebell in Jesmond comes with crispy maple bacon, melted Monterey Jack cheese, pickles, burger relish, lettuce and tomato all served in a sesame seed bun. Plus, it also comes with your choice of standard french fries or sweet potato chips for that extra gourmet touch. There also a gluten-free option and, if you're feeling extra adventurous, you can go "naked" and ditch the bun for two portobello mushrooms instead.
2. Calabrese Pizza, dAt bAr
dAt bAr may have a great reputation for the craft ales and ciders that it serves but the fame of its food is quickly catching up. Order one of their Luxe pizzas and you'll find that they're a very different kind to the weedy specimens that some pubs have on their menus. Take the Calabrese, for example. It's a delicious combination of Fior di Latte mozzarella, lemon-infused béchamel sauce, 'nduja sausage and Kalamata olives – about as far from a plain old margarita as it's possible to get.
3. Carolina Sweet Potato Hash 'n' Egg, Bierrex Smoke & Tap
Brilliant for brunch and divine for dinner, this is the ultimate in comfort food from those good ol' boys down at Bierrex Smoke & Tap. It brings you an authentic taste of the Southern states with its sautéed sweet potatoes with caramelised shallots, sweet smoked red peppers and spicy pork sausage. It's hand-cooked in a skillet and the finishing touch is a free range egg that's baked to runny perfection in the oven. If you fancy a side with it too then their collard greens are perfect.
4. Chicken Breast with White Wine Cream, The Laundrette
Pop along to The Laundrette and you'll find that they promise to offer you cocktails and carbs – and they certainly aren't fibbing. It's a menu packed with high-energy treats and one of the very best is this beauty. It's a whole roast chicken breast with a ginger and lemon crust, white wine cream, cocotte potato, kale and baby carrots as a concession to helping you get at least some of your five a day. If you want the perfect accompaniment then also order the rocket and Gran Padano salad: it goes a treat with the chicken.
Got a hunch that these are the sorts of lunch you'd like? Then let Deliveroo do the rest.
