Date ideas: 8 dinners for every kind of date

After a little date night inspiration? From "play it cool" first date ideas to "let's get serious" dates, we've found the dream dinner to match.

Tip: looking for a Deliveroo dinner to impress your date? Search for our 'cream of the crop' restaurants on the homepage or app.

1. The "effortless" date idea

"Oh, it's only a gastro-pub, nowhere fancy." Except that the guys behind it also run a Michelin-starred restaurant, so the food is a far cry from your usual pub grub. Impress with a 'laid-back' deluxe hot dog and handmade chips, like this one from Galvin HOP.

Where: Galvin HOP, Spitalfields, London

2. The "Spanish vibes" date idea

Have you ever had a bad date in a tapas bar? Didn't think so. Pick a selection of small plates to share, order a jug of sangria, and voila, atmosphere. We recommend a seafood paella, padrón peppers, and a classic tortilla española.

Where: Tapas Brindisa Soho, London

3. The "fail-safe French" first date

French food, how original, we hear you sigh. But they really know how to do best first date plates – so long as you don't go mad on the camembert. Go for a red-wine based winter warmer instead, like this classic beef bourguignon. Just master your pronunciation beforehand.

4. The "tonight's the night" date

Forget oysters. For a more subtle aphrodisiac, try hot chillies – they contain a chemical that increases circulation to get your blood pumping. Chilli-spiked Thai-style calamari comes with just the right amount of kick, and is ideal for sharing, too.

Where: Patara, South Kensington, London

5. The "I'm really into you" date idea

If you've seen them get face-friendly with brioche buns and a whole load of meat juice, and you still like them, then you know it's serious. Go for double-patty, double-cheese, double-everything, and be prepared to wipe burger sauce off their nose.

Where: Bleecker Street, Spitalfields, London

6. The "say it with steak" date idea

"I'm sorry", "I like you", "I want to wear onesies and drink tea together" – whatever you want to say to your date, a steak is the perfect accompaniment. Side it with creamed spinach and a bottle of Malbec, and we guarantee you'll win them over. Make veggies just as happy with an artisan cheese board.

7. The "play it cool" pizza party date idea

You hate the word "date", or any other nod to conventional romance. But you do like sharing a pizza with someone special, especially when prosecco is involved. Pimp your ultra-chilled pizza party with an anchovy-topped sourdough affair and a side helping of burrata.

Where: Franco Manca, various locations across London and Brighton

8. The "let's just be friends" date idea

Uh oh – you should never have swiped right. Resist the temptation to drink the whole bottle and go for a slurpy bowl of ramen instead. You'll be so face down in your broth, you get to avoid awkward eye contact while eating something delicious. Result.
