Whether you like them with a kiss or just on a fresh slice or two of sourdough, eggs benedict really are the perfect way to start the day. Now we're not dissing any of the other fantastic ways to serve eggs for breakfast or even brunch but there's something about the good old bennies that lifts them above the rest. We're really lucky in Manchester to have so many great breakfast takeaways where eggs benedict is a huge feature on the menu, as well as so many different variations of the fantastic poached egg. So whether it's for a lazy Saturday morning or just as a kick-start to your day, here are four of the very finest.
1. Poached Egg & Avocado - Cafe North
You might have known that the Northern Quarter would be our first port of call. Café North has been loyally feeding its inhabitants in the morning since long before it became the hotspot it is today so they're masters of their craft. One particular menu high point is their Poached Egg & Avocado. It's served on your choice of sourdough toast or bagel and the gently crushed avocado comes with quite a zesty kick. That's thanks to the lime, ginger, tomato, chilli and coriander that goes into the mix. Plus, if you're feeling extra extravagant, they'll even serve it with smoked salmon on the side.
2. Big Kat Breakfast - Katsouris
If you like your poached eggs with all the trimmings then Katsouris on Deansgate have just the dish for you. They mainly offer Greek-inspired meals but you couldn't get more British than their Big Kat Breakfast. Accompanying the two perfectly poached eggs (or fried if you want to ring the changes) you'll enjoy two award-winning sausages, three rashers of bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and beans. Or, if you fancy trying their veggie option, you'll find that the bangers are replaced with vegetarian versions and the bacon transforms into three slices of halloumi cheese.
3. Eggs Royale - The Vienna Coffee House
You'd expect a dish that's a cut above the rest from somewhere called The Vienna Coffee House and, believe us, you won't be disappointed. They're served up as a classic Eggs Benedict with a silkily smooth hollandaise sauce but what elevates them to regal status is the addition of salmon. Then there are mixed leaves and it's all served on your choice of a bagel or that Viennese favourite, the grated potato rosti.
4. Eggs Benedict with Halloumi - Federal Café
We're back to the Northern Quarter for our final selection, courtesy of the Federal Café. It's famous for its Aussie vibe and the two free range poached eggs that grace this dish certainly come sunny side up. They're also served in a hollandaise sauce with buttered spinach and sourdough as well as with the essential halloumi. If you're not the world's biggest cheese fan, no problem. You can also order them with salmon, bacon or avocado – or simply on their own.
Why wait to order? The hunt for the perfect poached egg is over, thanks to Deliveroo.
