Burgers were once fast food. But no more – now they're a gourmet dish.
And as the burger movement sweeps across the globe, Manchester – with its eclectic restaurants and love for hearty gastronomy – is perfect territory for a flourishing burger scene. Whether they're stacked high, sitting low, simply classic or a work of art, here are five of the best burgers you'll find in the city.
1. 100% Prime Aged Beef, The Alchemist
Experimentation and innovation is at the forefront of what they do at The Alchemist, but when it comes to burgers, it's tradition all the way. There's some serious respect for meat here, from the 100% Prime Aged Beef to the Buttermilk Battered Chicken Breast, everything is prepped with a whole load of care. You'll find each served up with a bloody mary ketchup though, so the burgers don't quite get out there without The Alchemist's contemporary flavour stamp.
Where: The Alchemist, Alderley Edge
2. The Cheese, Byron
When Byron's founder first started this Mancunian burger joint, he had one goal – to create some proper burgers. Using sourced British beef and only the freshest ingredients, that's just what's being done. And we think the fact that their classic Byron Burger is one of the most ordered takeaway dishes speaks for itself.
We love The Cheese here, a wonder packing in a beef patty with shredded iceberg lettuce, pickles, onion, American mustard, the special Byron sauce and a hearty helping of Byron cheese.
Where: Byron, 3 locations across Manchester
3. The Solita Burger, Solita
Solita Bar and Grill brings the best of New York to Manchester with an American-inspired menu.
There's a dozen unique burgers to opt for here, from the Catalan with grilled chorizo and the Gaucho with chimichurri to the Big Manc with not one, but two minced chuck steak 7-ounce patties.
If you're tired of the gourmet rage and you just want the traditional burger formula, opt for the Solita Burger, where you'll find a chunk steak patty, cheese, curly lettuce, onion, tomato and the house sauce. If you want to jazz things a bit on the side though, you can always go for some bacon covered onion rings…
Where: Solita, Didsbury
4. Veg-Mex, Handmade Burger Co
Care for blue cheese and bacon on your bun? How about peanut butter? If you're a burger lover who thinks you've seen it all, then think again. Handmade Burger Co has such a huge list of burgers you can try a different one every day of the month. 100% prime scotch beef, dirty burgers, USA BBQ pit recipes, slow-cooked pulled pork, 12 types of chicken burger and half a dozen vegetarian choices – it's all there.
We love the Mexican with homemade Mexican salsa, crushed avocado, fresh tortilla chips, hot jalapenos, chipotle sauce, fresh lettuce, tomato and red onion. And if you like this theme but you're flying the vegan flag, go for the Veg-Mex, where a falafel patty is subbed in for the beef, served up on a fresh sourdough bun.
Where: Handmade Burger Co, Spinningfields
5. Fried Chicken, Grand Daddy's Diner
Grand Daddy's Diner brings the big taste of the USA to a small 1950s-style restaurant in Manchester's city centre. They handmake their patties every day – using a recipe of secret seasonings – and pair them up with a suite of classic gourmet options.
The Egg 'N' Bacon is a time-tested favourite, with fried egg, turkey bacon, house mayo, shredded lettuce, fresh tomato, red onion and gherkin. If you want to double up on the American vibe, go for the Fried Chicken, succulent fried chicken is met with the house sauce, pickled red cabbage, gherkins and shredded lettuce.
